Scrap Blocks
I've been playing but not real happy with the results. I pulled out lots of fabric and cut strips.Posted by Picasa I also found a pattern that I had written down and wanted to try it. It was called Strait of Georgia (not the pic). I don't know where I saw it. I played with it and wasn't happy. So I tried this with some of the small blocks. (They are not sewed together.) I'm not sure about this either. Too scrapy? Not scrapy enough? Should there only be one color of the dark? What?

not scrappy enough would be my first thought...and if you threw in some mediums...it would also help in my opinion...sometimes these patterns look better in fewer colors/fabrics...as painful as that can be to a scrappy quilter!

There is no such thing as too scrappy!

Scrappy is where it's at. I like it.

Katie, thanks for visiting my blog, and for your great advice. Pictures of things in the stories and maps are both great ideas.
You are doing a great job and I'm not sure what I can provide you in terms of suggestions. Just make sure you write down the stories, in full detail, and put it in a book form. Maybe have a child illustrate it if you can't find enough pictures. I also don't limit my research to genealogy - I include your family in a historical perspective. So you can research the war, etc. and write about your family's involvement in the war, or how it affected them.
You said you've already asked the family questions. I would recommend you do it again and again. Talk about stuff and you will find that they know a lot more that you didn't find out about the first time. You can make a list of questions, or do like I do, and introduce a historical question every meeting. Ask about laundry and cooking, and dishwashing and church and burials and weddings, etc. Talk about distant cousins.
You can also ask general questions - who are all the people who have a college degree, did anyone in the family marry a relative, any twins, etc.
You can also do research at the library and historical societies. Look for obituaries and newspaper articles about recent people. Then you can look for census records - the 1930 and before are open records now.

Hi Katie, I like what you've done so far. My guess about not liking it, is that you don't have enough blocks done to make a decision. Like Cher, I think you'd need more color. Not necessarily brights, but a bit more intense than your pastels. Maybe some of the darks could be a deeper purple, blue, green, etc. And some mediums where right now you've got mostly lights.

Interesting that I was playing with something similar yesterday, waiting for my supper company to arrive. Just a bunch of 2" strips that were left overs from something else. I'll show you what I was up to...have to get a picture taken first tho...LOL
Worse comes to worse, pin them up and just "live" with them for awhile..*VBS* Hugs, Finn

I think it looks great! There is no such a thing as too scrappy. And now, I wouldn't use the same dark in each one. Make a few more blocks, put them up, then step back a way. I think you'll really like it!
